New Apps Discussed on February 14th, 2009:

  1. The Oscars® – Free - Check out all the Oscar nominees, pick your winners prediction list, and save it to share as part of an ongoing poll from other users of the app to see who the rest of the Oscar App-using world will pick. It’s pretty nice for those of us that do watch over every category (even the live-action short films) since we can track and maintain our picks list from the app. For regular moviegoers, there’s the usual nominees lists, streaming trailers, and descriptions of each film.
  2. Expense Tracker – Spending Lite – Free Lite version or $2.99 Premium Version – Keep track of your finances and generate easy-to-view diagrams that help you get a bigger picture of what’s going on with your money. With quick navigation, multiple account support, and lots of flexibility, Expense Tracker is one of the better finance apps available.
  3. RanDoo – Free – Compile a To-Do list and shake your iPhone to pick one item out at random. Sure, you could just actually go about picking to-dos by the need to do them, but for the indecisive, this could work. It’s also a bit nice to have as use for a n-sided die in case you need to pick randomly from a list.
  4. SkypeHelper – $0.99 – Quickly determine if it’s better to use your phone minutes or Skype at the current time. Quick, simple, and easier to remember than keeping your cell phone plan to memory. You will need Skype to work with this app (Skype is free).
  5. Not Always Right – Free – Essentially an RSS feed from one of my favorite sites. Not Always Right compiles employee stories about having to deal with customers, bosses, and other employees that aren’t too bright. The stories always tend to be pretty fun, well-presented, and worth a quick read on a daily basis.
  6. Jumpstart HUD – Free – Though only available for the iPhone 3G and 3GS, the JumpStart HUD provides you with the usual navigation, speed, and location information, but provides it to you by reflecting that information in your windshield. It does work too, especially if you have a clean windshield. The only issue tended to be the GPS taking a little too long to register sometimes.
Apps of the Week:
  • Eco Punk – Crazy environmentalist shooting cars to save the planet! – (Kevin) – $0.99 – You control a punk rabbit on a skateboard that’s trying to clean up garbage on a busy intersection. But you must collect the garbage while avoiding cars and police on segways. When you do well enough, you can collect powerups allowing you to smash up the cars or shoot down the cars in order to save the environment. It’s a bit zany, though the look, sound, and overall feel to the game are very unique and quite wonderful to look at. The controls have a lot of a learning curve and I found myself unnecessarily dying a lot and actually hoping for accelerometer controls. Hopefully some future updates will remedy this issue because the game is certainly very unique.
  • Tune Runner – (Bob) – Free – Turn your iPod songs into generated game levels! Then compare your score in those same songs/levels with others that played the same song-generated level too. The gameplay is fairly simple: draw a shape as many times as possible before your character reaches it, but the whole experience is pleasant and still fun for casual players. .
Silly Apps of the Week
  • Not News - (Bob) – $1.99 – The ad-free edition of Fark that allows you to check out Fark headlines, share links, sign into the site and comment on headlines, and even locate Fark meetups. If you’re a fan of Fark, it’s for you. And if you haven’t yet joined in, why not?
  • From Paris With Love - (Kevin) – Free – This is a promotional app based on the new Travolta action film that nobody went to see. In it, you can take pictures (or shots at) people you know, mark where they were “hit” on a map, and then take your own picture to merge with John Travolta so that you can create a hideous Appcast Listener/Travolta baby. Awesome.
