This week’s show: The No-Core  Topic Core Topic. This week found Bob doing the podcast on his own and unable to properly prepare a core topic on his own, so he simply picked a few more notable apps to talk about in its place.

New Apps Discussed on March 27th, 2010:

  1. WhatVeggie – Free – Use this app to look up what the codes found on the stickers on  your fruits or vegetable are identifying it as as well as get some general information about the fruit/veggie and even some recipe ideas for them.
  2. Across Age EX- $.99 - The lite or ‘experience’ version of the Across Age 2D classic-style action RPG game. The game itself looks like it would be fun, but this lite version should not cost $1 for as little actual content as it includes- it should either be free or include a lot more. The full game, which can be unlocked via in-app purchase, may be quite good, but charging for the lite version just doesn’t sit well for as short as the demo is.
  3. Yahoo! Sketch-a-Search – Free  - One of the two new apps this week from Yahoo!, Sketch-a-Search lets you draw out the area that you want to search for a place to eat on a map and comes back with a list for you. You can filter the results by several criteria.
  4. Demolition City Lite- Free – Lite version of the Demolition City physics-based puzzle game ($1.99 for the full version) where you have to use a set number of bombs to drop a structure below a set line on the screen. The 8 levels included are more challenging than you might think and there’s lots of replay value. The full version has over 40 levels and you can create your own as well.
  5. URLtoPDF-  Free- Very simple utility that given your email address and a website URL will send you a PDF of the website for offline viewing or archival. Simple and effective, though having a bookmarklet to send the URLs straight from Mobile Safari would make it a lot more convenient and useful.
App of the Week:
fwdMail (Bob) – Free – A new implementation of the now-Open Source reMail code, fwdMail allows you to download all of your email messages from any IMAP-capable service to your iPhone or iPod Touch and search through them quickly and easily without an internet connection.

Silly App of the Week:
iRate Lego Pro – (Bob) – Free (promo price) – Rate and comment on pictures of peoples’ LEGO creations and even take pictures and submit your own for critique. It’s fun enough as it is, but the description adds some additional amusement as it’s very obvious that the developers did not proofread it and instead just copied and pasted from some of their other apps (for rating cats and… rabbits?) without making all of the necessary changes appropriate for the new app….
