The presentation definitely looks great with a 2D/3D presentation of the playing field and 3D presentations of the battles between the Autobots and Decepticons. Kind of like DDR for your fingers, but mixed in with timed taps and holds that are meant to simulate your feet moving and hopping around a dance floor. There’s a good amount to do given that there’s a campaign in addition to the free form dancing. However, I didn’t like how the Hard difficulty isn’t unlocked from the start since the Easy gets boring very quickly. I was somewhat let down since it seems so simple to begin with, though I really like the presentation and wonder if others can improve on how it plays out. You move with the left virtual-stick and shoot in 360 degrees with the right virtual-stick. Normally, these games are all about survival, but Guerilla Bob actually features levels for you to progress through, as well as upgrades that get picked up along the way and bosses with different abilities. It’s a nice change of pace for the genre on the iPhone given that other video games like Smash TV had this same presentation. Graphics are sharp, colorful, and cartoony while music is fine. You need to use the transports to go collect resources while you fire the gun to protect the base and the transports from invaders. It sounds a bit complex, but it’s all very simple and very casual. The controls are smooth and the presentation is understandable and easy to pick-up-and-play. Great 2D graphics, a large amount of upgrades to choose from, and an incredibly smooth framerate make this one of the best games I’ve played on the iPhone this year. It’s a short hour to play though, but I loved every minute of it. I cannot wait for the additional levels and features to be released in an update. Based on the original Song Summoner for the iPod, where the gimmick was that listening to your music would level up your characters, this sequel follows the same concept and employs a fully-polished tactical RPG at your fingertips. The whole game is so professional and so slick that we are just starting to forgive Square Enix for Crystal Defenders. You can even import all your titles by taking pictures of the UPC barcodes with the iPhone camera. Pricier than using Delicious Library, but it’s a solid alternative given that Delicious Library isn’t coming back for a while.</li> <li><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1305" title="746192" src="http://iphone.30minuteslate.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/746192.png" alt="746192" width="65" height="65" /> <a href="http://appshopper.com/entertainment/pocket-blu"><strong>pocket BLU</strong></a> – Free – Universal and Fox teamed together to let you check out your Blu-Ray extra content via their own free app. The issue? You need a BluRay 2.0 player with Internet over Wi-Fi and some pocket BLU discs, such as Bruno, Inglourious Basterds, or Funny People (none of which are out yet). There’s some content, like trailers and promotional items, but the other content, such as alternate scenes and featurettes are locked out unless you have the BluRay disc. You are armed with a ball-breaking rope that you must shoot and set in place for bouncing balls to collide with and then hope to break all the balls before they descend upon you. Simple, fast-paced and different, Buster Bros was always one of my favorites in the arcade and this translation is very faithful. Controls are based on a the usual touch buttons and a new D-pad of sorts, a slide bar so you have more room to move left and right with precision. You control a plane in flight on a 2.5D view. So the plane is still headed only backwards or forwards, but you feel like there’s more range of direction. Controls are tilt-based and the were a bit too sensitive for me. This could have just been because I was playing on the train, so I recommend you find a more stable play environment. Otherwise, it looked great, there was a good sense of flight and the challenges were basic from collecting balloons to shooting down enemies. There’s some great range of flips and loop-di-loops to give the player a crazy sensation. I’d also like to note the game has a great “reversal” element it adds to let you instantly retry if you die.</li> <li><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1135" title="563285" src="http://iphone.30minuteslate.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/563285.png" alt="563285" width="65" height="65" /> <a href="http://appshopper.com/games/geodefense-swarm"><strong>geoDefense Swarm</strong></a><strong> – </strong>$0.99 – An excellent Tower Defense game involving mazing on a grid (imagine both Fieldrunners and 7 Cities). There’s 30 levels, each with different difficulty as well as endless levels where you just see how far you can go. There’s also OpenFeint capability for standardized online leaderboards and great retro vector-graphics look to it. But, I can’t help but feel the Madden name is really what is driving up the price because NFL 2010 offers a good football experience, in 3D, as well (with Gameloft even carrying through with their level of polish). The game was built from the ground-up for the iPhone and you can see it by the controls being very tap-based. There’s a new mode, Action Control Time, which slows down the game and allows you to pick from additional play options, offers so much cool strategy and “wow, I did it!” moments that you’ll see it show up in a lot more games in the future. Gameplay is fairly solid and the presentation is very top-notch (despite full-screen ads showing up). For $9.99, it’s steep, but I’d say if it dropped to $4.99, it’s worthwhile for a football fan. No multiplayer for now, but it’s supposedly coming.</li> <li><strong><img class="alignnone size-full wp-image-1119" title="321410" src="http://iphone.30minuteslate.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/321410.png" alt="321410" width="65" height="65" /> <a href="http://appshopper.com/games/arkanoid" target="_blank">Arkanoid</a> </strong>- $4.99 – Over 100 official stages from Taito. New updates, a versus mode, boss battles and more are all part of Taito’s polished Arkanoid experience which remains a bit high-priced compared to other brick-breaker titles. There’s still on-screen controls and the usual auto-aiming we see in a lot of FPS games, but you also get some other motions and buttons to provide more control over your character. Simply, it worked out well for me there. The rest of the game is presented with a lot of polish, including the audio work and the sense of zipping through the levels, but there’s not much to write home about for the story. You can turn off the gore and blood if you wish, but who’s really going to want to do that? Some believe that this game is actually just an emulator and the required 3 MB download (yes, you must download more of the game once you get it from the store) is actually a ROM. Though there’s no real confirmation as to the validity of the title yet, it’s still an interesting entry to the iPhone library since it’s a port of the 90’s Amiga game that a lot of old-school gamers will recognize. Discover a strange new world, fight your way to the end, and learn all the secrets of one of the coolest action-adventure games of the early 90’s. I was a fan of the original, but I just don’t find this port worth the price. The controls are just far too difficult. Given that some of the enemies are far away and difficult to see, this can be a problem sometimes. It feels a lot like Duck Hunt… but with Solid Snake. It looks nice, it plays fine, but there’s just something missing. The whole feel of the game is pretty good for the price, but some more updates and polish will be needed before this becomes a big hit.
